Thomas, the man who started the farm, grew up in Ecuador and didn’t come from a farming family. Now he provides fresh, organic fruits and vegetbles to over 800 families in the Santa Cruz / Watsonville area with his CSA program at Live Earth Farm. Thomas and his wife Constance started the farm fifteen years ago. Thomas went to Cornell University to study agriculture and decided to start an organic farm after learning about how conventional farms were harmful to the environment.
Thomas said that the most challenging thing on the farm is keeping everything in harmony with nature. He has to come up with ways to work around insects, weather and soil types to make a living in this tough economy. His favorite thing to do is harvesting. He likes working with the soil either with a tractor or by hand and loves selling his crops to his customers. “I love to see how my customers benefit from the food I grow,” Thomas said with a smile. Thomas and everybody who works on the farm love having schools come and work. They’ve always enjoyed teaching others about farming and food. About 600 kids visit the farm each year from 15-20 different schools.
Thomas and Constance Broz have definitely made a name for themselves in the Santa Cruz County. Starting out with only 15 customers and growing to 800+ with a waiting list. And we LOVE spending every Thursday at the farm!!
